How Many Shingles in a Bundle? The Ordering Errors, Ranked by What They Cost

Most asphalt shingle bundles hold 20 to 27 shingles, and the count is set by the product rather than by any industry standard. Owens Corning's guide specification lists its three-tab Supreme as three bundles of 26, 27, and 27 shingles per roofing square; its architectural TruDefinition Duration as three bundles of 20 or 22; and its heavy Berkshire profile as five bundles of nine. GAF's environmental product declaration for Timberline HDZ states that shingles are delivered "as bundles with options of 20 and 22 shingles per bundle." The count is a packing detail. The number that controls an order is coverage: three bundles cover one roofing square, which the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association defines as 100 square feet, while thicker profiles take four, five, or six bundles to cover that same 100 square feet.

The wrapper carries two numbers and only one of them is a specification

ARMA's Residential Asphalt Roofing Manual defines a bundle by its packaging rather than its contents: "A package of shingles. There are typically 3, 4 or 5 bundles per square." Its glossary defines a square as "a unit of roof measure covering 100 sq ft." Neither definition fixes a piece count, and the manual explains why: on the line, "the shingles are mechanically separated and stacked to form a bundle of the appropriate weight and quantity." Weight comes first in that sentence. A bundle is a package one person can carry up a ladder, and the count is whatever falls out of that constraint.

Coverage is geometry you can check yourself. Only the exposed strip counts, so a three-tab shingle measuring 12 by 36 inches at a 5-inch exposure shows 36 × 5 = 180 square inches, exactly 1.25 square feet. Eighty of them cover exactly 100 square feet, which is why Owens Corning publishes 100.0 sq ft per square for Supreme. An architectural shingle measuring 13¼ by 39⅜ inches at a 5⅝-inch exposure shows 39.375 × 5.625 = 221.5 square inches, or 1.538 square feet. Sixty-four cover 98.4 square feet, and that is what Owens Corning publishes for Duration, Oakridge, WeatherGuard HP, and Duration STORM. Not 100. Ninety-eight point four.

I spend my working life reading drinking-water results, and one reflex transfers. A first-draw sample and a five-minute-flush sample from the same kitchen tap return two different lead numbers, and neither is wrong; a result reported without its protocol is not a result. Piece count and coverage both describe a bundle honestly. Only one is a specification you can build from.

What each bundle actually holds, product by product

Every figure below comes from Owens Corning's Section 073113 guide specification, except the last row, which comes from GAF's NSF-certified environmental product declarations.

Look at what those counts add up to. Twenty plus 22 plus 22 is 64. Twenty-six plus 27 plus 27 is 80. The bundles inside a single square are deliberately unequal, and the "20 or 22" in the spec is not vagueness on Owens Corning's part. It is the split. Open three bundles of Duration, count 20 in the first, and nothing has gone wrong.

That table also settles the three-tab versus architectural question, which people ask backwards. The architectural bundle holds roughly 22 percent fewer pieces because each piece is larger and thicker, carrying a laminated second layer. It covers 1.6 percent less per square and weighs more, commonly 60 to 80 pounds against 45 to 55 for three-tab in published weight guides. The pieces are fewer because they are bigger, and neither count says anything about quality.

The errors, cheapest first

I have never nailed a shingle; I read specifications the way I read a lab report. The ranking below is by material dollars at $40 a bundle, roughly where big-box architectural shingles sat in mid-2026 in Angi and HomeGuide cost tracking. Substitute your own price; the order holds.

Fifth: comparing bundles instead of square feet

Cost: nothing on the count side, up to double on the price side. Every wrapper prints coverage, so someone who reads "26 shingles per bundle," buys architectural and finds 22 has lost a phone call. Price is the version that bites, because bundles do not cover equal area. A Supreme three-tab bundle covers 33.3 square feet, a Duration bundle 32.8, a Berkshire bundle 19.9, a Woodmoor bundle 16.7. At an identical $40 a bundle that works out to $1.20, $1.22, $2.01, and $2.40 per covered square foot. The same shelf price buys half the roof. Divide price by the coverage printed on the wrapper before comparing anything.

Fourth: treating three bundles as exactly 100 square feet

Cost: about 1.5 bundles per 30 squares, or $60 and a second trip. Three bundles of a 98.4 sq ft product cover 98.4 square feet. On a 30-square roof, 90 bundles give you 2,952 square feet against 3,000 needed, 48 square feet short before a single cut. GAF's retail listings state 33.33 sq ft per bundle for Timberline HDZ, implying exactly 100 per square, while the shingle's published geometry (same size, same 5⅝-inch exposure, 64 shingles per square) yields 98.4. Order from the lower figure. Rounding up costs one bundle; rounding down costs a delivery.

Third: leaving starter strip and ridge cap out of the order

Cost: a few hundred dollars in material, and a crew's day, which is why it ranks above its price tag. ARMA is explicit that an estimate has a second half: "the required quantity of starter strips, drip edges, hip and ridge shingles, valley flashing and ventilation accessories must be determined," each depending on "the length of the eave, rakes, hips, ridges and valleys." Those are linear feet, and no square-foot arithmetic produces them.

The units are unrelated to the field shingles. GAF's Pro-Start starter strip runs 38 pieces to the bundle for 120.33 linear feet of eave. GAF's Seal-A-Ridge ridge cap covers 25 linear feet a bundle at a 6⅔-inch exposure, roughly 45 pieces. Owens Corning's Starter Strip Plus is listed at 105 linear feet. A house with 100 feet of eaves and 60 feet of hips and ridges needs one starter bundle and three ridge bundles, none of it in the field-shingle count.

My own gutter is still dripping an hour after the rain quit, which is what sent me out with a tape measure, and what I learned is that I had never measured my eave line. I knew the footprint of my 1920s rowhouse from the deed. The eave was a separate number, in feet, along the edge where the water lands.

Second: guessing the waste percentage

Cost: about 7.3 bundles on a 30-square roof, $290, plus a real risk of a color-lot mismatch on the resupply. ARMA's manual gives a range: "Most roofing jobs require anywhere from 2% to 10% excess shingles due to trim waste. The amount of trim waste depends on how many valleys, dormers, hips and roof penetrations there are." Mark S. Graham reported the identical 2-to-10-percent language from the 2022 edition in NRCA's Professional Roofing in October 2022. I read the 2014 edition directly and Graham's report of the 2022 one, which is the extent of what I can vouch for.

The flat 15 percent circulating on contractor blogs and calculator sites is not ARMA's number and is attributed to no manual anyone quotes. On a simple gable with two planes and one vent stack, 2 percent is defensible. With four valleys and three dormers, 10 percent may not be enough. Counting your own valleys is a twenty-minute job that decides a $290 spread.

First, and by a distance: measuring the footprint and never applying the pitch

Cost: up to 41.4 percent of the entire field-shingle order. This is the error that guarantees a second delivery, and a second delivery is where color-lot mismatches come from. A roof plane is longer than the ground beneath it by a factor from the Pythagorean theorem: √(rise² + 144) ÷ 12. Verify every value in the list yourself.

ARMA measures slope with a 12-inch carpenter's level held level against the roof, then measures down from the free end; that drop in inches is the rise. A 1,600-square-foot footprint at 6/12 is 1,788.9 square feet of roof, or 17.9 squares. Ordering from the footprint gets you 49 bundles when the roof needs 55, a six-bundle hole worth $240 before waste. Repeat it on a 2,000-square-foot footprint at 12/12 and you are 828 square feet short, more than 25 bundles, about $1,000.

The order, step by step

  1. Measure each roof plane separately and sum the areas; ARMA subdivides complex roofs into triangles and rectangles.
  2. Determine each plane's pitch with a 12-inch level, then multiply its footprint area by √(rise² + 144) ÷ 12.
  3. Divide the sloped total by 100 to get squares.
  4. Add trim waste inside ARMA's 2 to 10 percent range, chosen from your own count of valleys, dormers, hips and penetrations.
  5. Divide by the coverage per bundle printed on the wrapper, not by three, and round up.
  6. Measure eaves, rakes, hips and ridges in linear feet; order starter and ridge cap against those.
  7. Photograph the wrapper before the first bundle is opened.

When to stop estimating and pay for a takeoff

Three conditions push a roof past what a homeowner should price from the ground. Diagonal runs are the first. Hips and valleys do not follow the roof-plane factor; they need √(rise² + 288) ÷ 12, and every foot of valley consumes shingle on both sides of the cut. Mixed pitches are the second: ARMA calculates each plane at its own factor and sums them, and averaging pitches produces a wrong number that looks reasonable. Specialty products are the third: at five or six bundles per square, bundle coverage roughly halves, and every rule of thumb you have absorbed is off.

Fastening is where a takeoff pays for itself. The International Residential Code, Section R905.2.6, requires at minimum four fasteners per strip shingle or two per individual shingle, and defers to stricter manufacturer instructions. High-wind zones and the upper warranty wind tiers require six. That is a nail count, a labor number, and a warranty condition, and no bundle calculation shows it.

The delivered bundles do not match the count you expected

Check the coverage before you count anything, since the square-footage figure on the wrapper is what your invoice and your warranty are written against. Then compare bundle counts against your order, not piece counts. If pieces are what you are counting, remember the split: a three-bundle square of Duration is 20, 22, 22, so a bundle holding 20 is what the specification calls for. ARMA notes that ASTM and UL classifications and code approvals are "typically printed on the shingle packaging, usually a paper or plastic wrapper," so an unmarked wrapper is itself a finding for the supplier. A bundle light on weight, split open, or in the wrong color name is a claim; a bundle two pieces under your arithmetic is the packing split.

The record that makes the next repair cheap

I keep a shallow box with a first-draw bottle, a flush-time card, a bagged brass aerator, and a photograph of the tap it came off, because when a result comes back the question that matters is what condition the fixture was in when the sample was drawn. Four years later, memory is not evidence. A photograph is.

The roofing version costs one minute. Before the first wrapper goes in the dumpster, photograph it with the product name, color name, coverage per bundle, and plant or lot code in the frame. Then write down the bundles delivered, the date, and the dimensions you measured for each plane.

The lot code is the part people skip and later want. ARMA instructs roofers to work from the bottom of the roof across and up, because that "will blend shingles from one bundle into the next and minimize any shade variation," and states plainly that "slight shading should be accepted as a normal variation in asphalt roofing." Shading between bundles from one delivery is invisible. Shading between your roof and four bundles bought in 2030 from a different run is what you see from the sidewalk every time you pull in.
